Outline of the Conference

　SRI is the international conference on synchrotron radiation instrumentation that is related to synchrotron radiation light sources and beam line techniques, experimental techniques, and applications in synchrotron radiation science. Following successful conferences in Hamburg (1982), Stanford (1985), Tsukuba (1988), Chester (1991), and Stony Brook (1994), the 6th International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI) will be held from August 4 to August 8, 1997, in Himeji in western Japan. The conference will be hosted by the SPring-8 Project Team that has been constructing a third-generation synchrotron radiation facility in a hard X-ray region with a storage ring of 8 GeV.

　The year 1997 is a memorial year, marking the 50th anniversary since synchrotron radiation was first observed. Over the last decade, remarkable advances have been made in the development of light sources, radiation optics and experimental techniques as well as in science in general. Recently, several third-generation synchrotron radiation facilities have come into use or are under construction. Since remarkable scientific results have been obtained from the utilization of these facilities, it is a good opportunity to bring together scientists and engineers from a number of diverse fields working in synchrotron radiation science.

　The scientific program will include following topics :

Tentative Program of SRI '97

　The scientific program consists of plenary sessions, and oral and poster presentation sessions including facility reports.

　Except for the opening lecture, plenary sessions and the special lecture on "Fifty Years of Synchrotron Radiation," papers will be mainly presented in poster sessions.

　The Program Committee may request that several of the posters be presented orally, in addition to the invited talks.

●Industrial Exhibition

As with the previous conferences, there will be an industrial exhibition. It will be held in the exhibition room of the Himeji Citizens' Hall. Those who are interested in the industrial exhibition, please contact the main office of the conference for detailed information.

●Social Program

A social program will be planned and announced in the final announcement. Registrations for this program will probably be accepted at the information desk at the conference. Registration for the SPring-8 site tour will also be requested on the first day of the conference (August 4) at the information desk.

Satellite Meetings

　Satellite meetings will be organized before and after the conference, according to the proposals of the International Advisory Committee and Program Committee. Presently, several meetings are planned as follows:

●XEL'97

(1997 International Workshop on X-rays and Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography)

- This workshop is held every two years to review the progress of X-ray proximity and EUV lithography technologies.

●International Workshop to Study the Function of Small Storage Rings and Next Generation Free-Electron Lasers

- The purpose of the workshop is to summarize the status and the potential of small synchrotron light sources and free electron lasers.

●Satellite Meeting on Crystallographic Applications of SR

- Topics for discussion will focus on macromolecular application and material science and physics application in addition to tutorial lectures for young scientists.

●Compact Synchrotron Light Sources in the New Age

- Covers recent activities concerning compact light sources throughout the world and future prospects, following a discussion of the new role of micro fabrication techniques.

　Details of the meetings with application forms will follow with the final announcement.

　Individuals planning to attend the conference are urged to register in advance. Advance registration must be received no later than June 30, 1997. After June 30, no registration will be accepted by fax or mail. On-site registration is welcome. The registration form appears in this booklet. ●On-Site Registration:

　Registration at the conference will be available from 13:00-18:30 August 3 (Sun.) at the Himeji Chamber of Commerce. On the other days of the conference, the registration desk and the secretariat will be open 9:00-17:00. On arrival at the Conference site, all delegates must enroll personally at the registration desk. Delegates are also requested to enroll accompanying persons. All registered participants will receive a conference kit containing the final program, abstracts, identification badge and invitation for social events etc.

●Confirmation and Receipt:

　The secretariat will send a confirmation receipt with the registration form to each registered participant and accompanying person whose payment has been received. This confirmation letter must be presented as proof of payment at the conference registration desk upon arrival.

●Cancellation and Refund Policy:

　Refunds for cancellation of conference registration must be requested in writing (letter or fax) to the Conference Secretariat. An administration charge of 5,000 yen will be deducted from registration fee.

Financial Support to Young Scientists

　The Organizing Committee will provide financial support to young scientists under the following conditions ;

1. Candidates are PhD students / postdoctoral fellows who submit papers to this conference (main meeting).
2. A total of 50 delegates will be selected by the Organizing Committee.
3. The support to be provided will be the waiver of the registration fee, free accommodation in the SPring-8 Guest House (Harima), and free transportation between SPring-8 (Harima) and the conference site.

Abstract Submission and Conference Proceedings

　Abstracts must be submitted no later than March 31, 1997. Abstracts postmarked later than March 20, 1997 (Air-mailed) or submitted electronically after March 31, 1997, will be rejected.

　Abstracts must be submitted by the "ABSTRACT FORM SRI'97" on this booklet and the instruction of Abstract submission can be seen by the enclosed papers.

　The information related to the publication of the SRI '97 Proceedings in the Journal of Synchrotron Radiation will be given in the final announcement. Papers of the Proceedings must be brought to the conference and handed in at the conference reception desk. The Proceedings in the Journal of Synchrotron Radiation will be published on May 1, 1998. The papers will be reviewed according to the standard procedures of the Journal.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

　Deadline for submission: March 31, 1997. Abstracts postmarked later than March 20, 1997 (air-mailed), or submitted electronically after March 31, will be rejected.

Abstracts can be submitted in one of the following formats:

1. E-mail plain text or html
2. Hardcopy with Microsoft Word or Wordperfect file on a 3.5 floppy disk.
3. Hardcopy submission

Generalities Common to all Submissions:

1. The entire abstract, including title, authors and their affiliations, footnotes, references, diagrams, tables, equations, etc., must fit it into a 17.0 cm wide by 12.5cm high and must contain no more than 250 words. Times font with 12 point size characters must be used.
2. The title must be in capitals (except where chemical formulae require lower case letters) and should contain not more than 100 characters. 2.5cm indentation must be left in the first line for insertion of the abstract number.
3. The paper must be presented by the author named first in the abstract.

General Information

　The conference will be held in the Himeji Citizens'Hall and the Chamber of Commerce Hall, which are located in the center of Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture. A detailed map of Himeji City will be enclosed with the final announcement.

　Himeji City is located about 90 km west of Osaka and is known for Himeji Castle, designated as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1994. Science Garden City, where the SPring-8 facility is located, is about 30 km northwest of Himeji City.

●How to reach Himeji City

　Entry into Japan is usually via Kansai International Airport (Osaka) or New Tokyo International Airport(Narita). In either case, you can reach Himeji City from Shin-Osaka or Osaka stations via JR (Japan Railways).

●Climate and Clothing

　Himeji city and the SPring-8 site are sunny in August, with temperatures of about 35℃ in the afternoon and 25℃ at night.

●Passports and Visas

　All foreign visitors entering Japan must possess a valid passport. Participants from countries requiring visas should apply at the Japanese Consular office in their respective countries. For details, please consult your travel agent, or the nearest Japanese Mission.

●Foreign Exchange and Traveler's Checks

　It is recommended that participants purchase traveler's checks in Japanese Yen or U.S. dollars prior to departure. The secretariat will accept only Japanese yen in cash on site. Foreign currency can be exchanged at most banks and at the international airports.

●Electrical Appliances

　Japan operates on 100-110 volts for electrical appliances. The frequency is 50 Hz in eastern Japan including Tokyo, and 60 Hz in western Japan including Himeji.

●Shopping

　Most department stores are open from 10:00 to 19:00. They are open on Sundays and national holidays.

●Currency Exchange

　There are several banks around the conference site where foreign currencies exchange are available by presenting your passport. Japanese banks are open 9:00 to 15:00. No monetary exchange services are available at the conference site.

●Consumption Tax

　A 5% of consumption tax is scheduled to be introduced in Japan from April 1, 1997.

●Tipping

　In Japan, tips are not necessary anywhere, even at hotels and restaurants.

●Insurance

　The organizer cannot accept responsibility for accidents which might occur. Delegates are encourged to obtain travel insurance (medical, personal accident, and luggage) in their home country prior to departure.

Hotel Accommodation and Tours

　The Japan Travel Bureau, Inc. (JTB) has been appointed as the official travel agent for the conference and will handle all related travel arrangements including hotel accommodation and tours.

●Hotels

　Several hotels are available within walking distance of the venue in Himeji City. The Organizing Committee plans to reserve hotels for conference participants at reduced rates. The guest house of the SPring-8 facility in the Science Garden City, 30 km northwest of Himeji City will also be available at low rates. Commuting buses will be operated in the mornings and after afternoon sessions/banquet between the guest house and Himeji Citizens Hall. Detailed information will be included in the following announcement and reservations will be accepted thereafter.
