Report on the International GENNESYS Congress on Nanotechnology and Research Infrastructures
2010年5月26−28日にスペイン、バルセロナのバルセロナ国際会議場で開催されたThe International GENNESYS Congress on Nanotechnology and Research Infrastructuresに参加したので報告する。
GENNESYSとはGrand European Initiative on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology using Neutron- and Synchrotron Radiation Sourcesの略で、ヨーロッパ全体で、中性子施設や放射光施設を活用したナノサイエンス・ナノテクノロジー研究の推進に関し、戦略を策定するプロジェクトのようである。2010年4月29日に5年間の活動の集大成として、GENNESYS White Paperが発表されている[1][1] GENNESYS White Paper, edited by H. Dosch and M. H. Van de Voode, (Max-Planck Institute for Metals Research), ISBN 978-3-00-027338-4.。これは、大学、研究所、企業の600名以上の専門家との協力でGENNESYSが纏めたナノサイエンス・ナノテクノロジー戦略のロードマップであり、ナノサイエンス・ナノテクノロジー研究に必要不可欠な大型研究施設の新しい戦略的な役割を立案している。
本会議は、このWhite Paperに記載されている主な結果や提言を発表し、議論することを目的に開催された国際会議である。EUの議長国がスペインということも、スペインで開催された理由のようであった。これらの経緯からも分かるように、本会議は純粋な研究発表の場ではなく、政策立案者や決定者に対してWhite Paperの内容をお披露目するような会議であった。したがって、文末に示すプログラム[2][2] プログラムの詳細は、http://www.gennesys2010.eu/ に掲載されている。を見ても分かるように、発表者には、学会の会長、研究所の所長、企業の役員といった面々が名を連ねていた。
会議の趣旨からも分かるとおり、ほとんどはヨーロッパからの参加者であったが、他の地域の現状を聞く、という意味で、パネリストとして、米国や日本から数人の参加者があった。日本からの参加者は、（独）物質材料研究機構（NIMS）の岸輝雄前理事長（代理：竹村誠洋国際室室長）、JASRIの大野英雄専務と筆者の3名であった。大野専務は、“Advanced Photon & Neutron Sources and Laser RIs: User Facilities for Grand Challenges in NanoScience and Technology”というセッションでパネルスピーカーとして、SPring-8を利用したナノテクノロジー研究の現状と将来展望を紹介した（写真1、2）。一方、筆者は、“Industry Challenges in the World of Open Innovation”というセッションのパネルスピーカーとして、SPring-8での自動車関連のナノ材料研究の現状と放射光の有効性について発表した。日本の情報が少なかったこともあり、発表後、オーガナイザーの1人から大変感謝して頂いた。GENNESYSとしては、この会議を発端としてWhite Paperで纏めた提言を、実施に移していきたいとのことであった。
今回、この会議に参加する機会を頂いて、ヨーロッパ全体で戦略を取り纏めることが、いかに大変かを実感することができた。また、ヨーロッパの科学関係の重鎮とも面識ができ、大変良い経験になった。出張の機会を与えて頂いた方々に感謝いたします。
