1. Service Overview
The measurement service is provided by Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute (JASRI) to perform several basic measurements at SPring-8. Users can send their own samples to SPring-8 for the measurements.
This program is designed to provide a flexible accessibility to companies and research organizations that do not have sufficient resources within, and to meet the need for a timely access of the measurement techniques.
Application for the service is considered as a proprietary proposal and is subject to proprietary beamtime fee and user fee applicable to proprietary Time-Designated Proposals. (See 4. Fees)
Therefore, the contents of the application for the use will be kept confidential, and the obtained results and the patent rights based on those results may be used exclusively.
2. Research Period and Beamlines
2.1 Research Period
We accept applications on an as-needed basis. For inquiries about the dates available for the service or for information about the processes and procedures, please contact the JASRI staff (See 8. Contacts). The turnaround time depends on whether you come to SPring-8 or not, and the type and number of samples.
2.2 Beamlines
Beamline | Measurement methods |
BL14B2 XAFS II | XAFS |
BL19B2 X-ray Diffraction and Scattering II | Powder X-ray Diffraction Small Angle X-ray Scattering |
BL28B2 White Beam X-ray Diffraction | High energy X-ray CT |
BL46XU HAXPES II | Hard X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy |
3.Sample Preparation
3.1 Measurement Samples and Measurement Conditions
Measurement Methods | Measurement Samples | Measurement Conditions |
XAFS | Only samples prepared for XAFS measurement are available. | Measurements are carried out in air at room temperature and in-situ measurements (e.g. under a gas atmosphere) cannot be performed. |
Powder X-ray Diffraction | Only powder samples contained in glass capillary tubes are accepted. | Measurements are carried out in air. The variable temperature measurements (user attendance in measurement sessions is required as a general rule) are available using the cryogenic device (between 100 and 450 K) and the high-temperature device (between room temperature and 1000 K). |
Small Angle X-ray Scattering | As a rule, only solid samples fixed on a 35 mm slide mount can be measured. | The camera length is 3 m (for normal small-angle X-ray scattering, SAXS) or 42 m (for ultrasmall-angle X-ray scattering, USAXS). The X-ray energy is in the range of 18–30 keV and is determined upon prior consultation. The concurrent use of both SAXS and USAXS during one beamtime is permitted. The measurements are carried out at room temperature in air atmosphere. |
High energy X-ray CT | Only samples prepared for CT measurement are available. | The samples have to be set in dedicated holder. Measurements are carried out in air at room temperature. Dedicated sample holders will be sent in advance according to the number and size of samples. |
Hard X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy | Your solid sample (e.g. thin film) is properly prepared on a substrate and be made suitable for the sample holder of our existing equipment. Please note that we do not accept water- or gas-containing samples that have a possibility of affecting the vacuum of the equipment, or samples that are electrifiable (e.g. insulator). | Your sample will be mounted in air, and measurements will be performed under vacuum at room temperature. Please note that sample transfer using a vacuum vessel, measurements using a flood gun, and in-situ measurements are not available. The excitation X-ray energy is fixed at 8 keV. |
NOTE: Unacceptable Sample
The following samples are not accepted:
a) Biological samples (e.g. animals, plants, and microorganisms)
b) “Level 4” chemicals defined by JASRI (i.e. substances requiring the approval of the competent authority)
– Specific substances regulated by the “Law on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the Regulation of Specific Chemicals”
– Narcotic and psychotropic drugs regulated by the “Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Law”
– Stimulant drugs and ingredients of stimulant drugs regulated by “Stimulant Drug Control Law”
– Hemp and hemp products regulated by the “Cannabis Control Law”
– Opium, poppy or poppy straw regulated by the “Opium Law”
– Scheduled drugs by the “Pharmaceutical Affairs Law”
– Specified poisonous substances regulated by the “Poisonous and Deleterious Substances Control Law”
– Substances for which manufacturing is prohibited under the “Industrial Safety and Health Law”
3.2 Preparation / Shipment
Please make sure that the samples are properly prepared and have been made suitable for each measurement before the shipping. If you have question about preparation of the samples, please contact the staff (See 8.1 Application/Inquiries about Service and Samples). Please make sure to send your sample to 8.3 Sample Shipping Address.
Important: To ship the samples from outside Japan, you need to be aware of regulations covering international shipping of chemicals. Please note that you need to go through all steps (e.g. paperwork, customs procedures, etc.) required for entry of the samples to Japan at User’s responsibility and expense.
3.3 Time Unit for Use
The basic unit is one hour, but for hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the minimum is four hours.
4. Fees
The fee is calculated by multiplying the sum of 4.1 and 4.2 below by the beam time and will be invoiced after the measurements. Beam time is determined by discussion with the staff in accordance with the procedures described in the application procedure below. Quotations are not issued. (Reference: “SPring-8 User Fees“)
4.1 Beamtime Fee
Type of fee | Per hour |
Beamtime fee + 50% premium | 90,000 yen |
4.2 User Fees
Type of fee | Per hour |
User fee (fixed) | 1,340 yen |
- A variable fee will be calculated and added in accordance with the amount of liquid helium actually used.
