Details: Liquid He

There are two ways of using liquid He at SPring-8.

1. In the case of liquid He provided by JASRI

Users can use the Liquid He by paying the cost according to the amount used as a part of the User Fee System.

Unit price

Liquid He9,540 yen/liter (incl. tax)

Notice: Price Increase for Liquid Helium

The price of liquid helium continues to rise in response to the global logistics turmoil, soaring prices of energy resources such as crude oil natural gas, and further price hikes of various resources following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

JASRI has been seeking a way to avoid the price increase, placing priority on securing the necessary volume so that experiments will not be disrupted. However, due to the unavoidable situation of a large purchase price increase, we will raise the price.
Please note that the unit price is subject to change without any prior notice. In case the unit price revised, the notice will be on the UI site.

For users planning to use liquid helium , please secure a budget in anticipation of the price increase.

In addition, in order to avoid excess liquid helium, please calculate the estimated amount more accurately in the preliminary survey of the required amount. Please be aware that if there is a large difference between the prior survey of the required amount and the actual amount used, you may be billed for the entire amount of liquid helium prepared based on your declaration.

Target beamlines

  • BL17SU
  • BL19LXU
  • BL25SU

For use in BL39XU and BL45XU is only available the liquid He provided by JASRI due to the beamline equipment constraints.

Calculation of the amount used and billing

The difference between the amounts of liquid He remaining in the container at the start and end of the experiment is calculated using the liquid He level monitor.

Start of experiment: The amount of liquid He remaining in the container is displayed on the level monitor. Enter the value (in 0.1 cm increments) in the Liquid He Consumption Form as the start value (some beamlines use different increments).

End of experiment: The amount of liquid He remaining in the container is displayed on the level monitor. Enter the value (in 0.1 cm increments) in the Liquid He Consumption Form as the end value (some beamlines use different increments).

Calculate the amount used: Subtract the end value from the start value to find the amount of liquid He used and enter the value in the Liquid He Consumption Form (in 0.1 L increments). To convert the value from cm (liquid level) to liters (volume), perform linear interpolation referring to the conversion table attached to the container.

Report the amount used: Report the total amount of liquid He used by filling out a Beamtime Report online (in 0.1 L increments). The fee is calculated by multiplying the unit price by the reported value (in 0.1 L increments) and rounding off to the nearest whole number (in yen).

JASRI will charge users a fee based on the total amount given in the Report.

2. Using liquid He prepared by project leaders

Project leaders (or agents entrusted by project leaders) can bring liquid He into SPring-8 and are responsible for returning its Dewar container.  Prepare a Dewar container to be filled with liquid He after carefully checking its compatibility with the insertion port and the transfer tube at the side of the experimental setup.
