Policy on Research Proposals and Beamtimes for 2021A

Since a certain amount of beamtime cancellation due to entry restrictions to Japan from overseas and other reasons arising from COVID-19 is expected in 2021A term, the following policies will be introduced for research proposals and beamtimes for 2021A term.

1. Recommendation for Project Leaders with Overseas Affiliations
   SPring-8 Users Office ask that you make efforts to secure research collaborators currently residing in Japan who would be able to conduct the proposed experiments (including setup) at SPring-8 even in your absence. Please note that this is not a necessary requirement for proposal application and does not affect the proposal review.
   If you cannot secure such collaborators 40 days before the scheduled start of your experiment, your beamtime will be cancelled and allocated to the waitlist (see below)．
2. Selection of Waitlisted Proposals
   From the list of research proposals (General and Budding Researchers Support Proposals) which were rejected for the 2021A proposal call, a waitlist will be made based on the results of the scientific, technical and safety reviews. Project leaders whose research proposals have been selected for the waitlist will be notified in the “Notification of Review Results”, which will be available online in mid-February 2021.
   When beamtime cancellations arise, a proposal from the waitlist will be selected. Selection will be made primarily on scientific merit, but factors such as requested bunch modes and numbers of shifts will be also be taken into consideration. The project leader of the selected proposal will be contacted no later than approx. 30 days before the scheduled start of the experiment.

Note

(2021.5.7 Added) Even if a 2021A proposal is cancelled due to COVID-19, it will not be postponed to the period after September 2021 and a new application is necessary for 2021B term.
