What is the Graduate Student Program?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Graduate Student Program is the research proposal using SPring-8 installed synchrotron radiation with broad wavelength range spanning infrared light to X-rays and advanced measurement systems (same as General Proposals) and intends to encourage graduate students who will shape the future of synchrotron radiation research. Interested and qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. Please prepare your proposal application using the following guidelines and instructions. Please also refer to the &#8220;<a class=\"c1\" href=\"\/?p=57004&amp;lang=en\">Call for 2027A SPring-8 Research Proposals &#8211; Overview &#8211;<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><a name=\"2\"><\/a>2. Application Requirements<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Applicants must be doctoral students at the time of the experiment at SPring-8.<br \/>Applicants are required to show initiative and take proactive responsibility when conducting their research. All applicants must obtain permission to apply from their academic advisors, who will be responsible for the experiment.<br \/>Additionally, to be eligible, applicants must meet one of the following enrollment criteria:<br \/>\u30fbStandard Doctoral Program (3-year course after Master&#8217;s): Enrolled in the equivalent of the 1st year or higher (having completed less than 12 months of enrollment).<br \/>\u30fbIntegrated Doctoral Program (5-year consistent course): Enrolled in the equivalent of the 3rd year or higher (having completed 24 months or more but less than 36 months of enrollment).<br \/>\u30fb3-Year Doctoral Program (Separate 3-year course): Enrolled in the equivalent of the 1st year or higher (having completed less than 12 months of enrollment).<br \/>\u30fb4-Year Doctoral Program (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, or Veterinary Science): Enrolled in the equivalent of the 2nd year or higher (having completed 12 months or more but less than 24 months of enrollment).<br \/>If you are unsure whether or not you qualify, please contact the SPring-8 Users Office at <a class=\"c1\" href=\"mailto:sp8jasri@spring8.or.jp\">sp8jasri@spring8.or.jp<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT:<\/strong><br \/>Users must maintain their student status at the time of experiment. Submission Deadline for Online Proposals<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Tuesday, December 15, 2026, 10:00 am (Japan time)<\/strong><br \/>(Agreement: December 22, 2026)<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>To avoid last-minute technical problems and possible network congestion caused by heavy online traffic, you are strongly encouraged to complete and submit your application well in advance of the deadline. If you have trouble completing\/submitting your application online, please contact the SPring-8 Users Office (see <a class=\"c1\" href=\"#13\"><strong>13. Contact<\/strong><\/a>) before the deadline.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Upon successful submission, you will receive a confirmation email attached with a copy of the Agreement (Rules for Users) in PDF format. Proposal Review<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Submitted Graduate Student Proposals are subject to review as General Proposals at the SPring-8 Proposal Review Committee (SPring-8 PRC). At the SPring-8 PRC, the scientific and technical value, the degree of expectation to produce results, the necessity of SPring-8 as a research tool, ethics (e.g., exclusively for peaceful purposes), and the technical feasibility and safety of the experiment are comprehensively peer reviewed. If the research area of your proposal is Industrial Applications, the review of the scientific and technical value will be focused on the potential and significance of the expected results in terms of technologies for industrial base, the social significance of the proposal, and the contribution to social economy. Please read the instruction of \u201c<a class=\"c1\" href=\"\/?p=40928&amp;lang=en\">General Proposals and Graduate Student Proposals Intended to Be Reviewed in the Industrial Application Field<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><a name=\"9\"><\/a>9. Notification of Review Results<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Review results will be available on \u201cMy Page\u201d of the UI site in early February 2027.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><a name=\"10\"><\/a>10. Report Submission<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Users are required to submit an Experiment Summary Report online within 60 days of their experiment. Submitted reports are made publicly available online two weeks after the report submission deadline for the last experiment of the term (60 days after the end of each half-year research term + two weeks). For details, click <a class=\"c1\" href=\"\/?p=22547&amp;lang=en\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><a name=\"11\"><\/a>11. Publication of Research Results<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Publish your research in the form of a refereed journal (incl. refereed proceedings and Doctoral thesis), a Specific Synchrotron Radiation Facilities Research Report refereed by JASRI, or a technical journal approved by JASRI, and register the published works with the Publications Database within three years from the end of the research term. Others<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4><a id=\"12_1\" name=\"12_1\"><\/a>12.1 User Fees<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Supported by the Government&#8217;s treasury, 2027A users of Graduate Student Program from domestic universities are exempt from paying user fees (fixed and variable fees) within the budget. Please note that the variable fee is not always covered when it exceeds the limits of the budget.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Click <a class=\"c1\" href=\"\/?p=42032&amp;lang=en\">here<\/a> for more details about the user fees.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4><a id=\"12_2\" name=\"12_2\"><\/a>12.2 Support for Expenses<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We will cover the domestic travel expenses including the SPring-8 Guest House charge for two people (a project leader and one student as a project team member) for applicants from domestic universities. However, there are cases where support may not be provided under JASRI&#8217;s regulations, so please contact the SPring-8 Users Office in advance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4><a id=\"12_3\" name=\"12_3\"><\/a>12.3 Complementary Use with SACLA, J-PARC MLF or HPCI including the supercomputer Fugaku<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We also invite SPring-8 Graduate Student Proposals for complementary use with SACLA, J-PARC MLF (neutron facility) or HPCI including the supercomputer Fugaku (public computational resource of High Performance Computing Infrastructure including the supercomputer Fugaku). For details, refer to the &#8220;<a class=\"c1\" href=\"\/?p=57026&amp;lang=en\">Call for 2027A SPring-8 Research Proposals in Complementary Use with SACLA, J-PARC MLF or HPCI including the supercomputer Fugaku<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4><a id=\"12_4\" name=\"12_4\"><\/a>12.4 Deadline for Next-Term Proposals (the 2nd and the 3rd Period of 2027A)<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The deadline for proposals to be conducted during the second (mid-May \u2013 late June 2027) and the third (late June \u2013 late July 2027) periods of 2027A are in March and April 2027, respectively, at Beamlines with sixannual calls for proposals. Please note that due to the suspension of SPring-8 operations associated with the SPring-8-II upgrade beginning in the 2027B period, the call for proposals for the 2027B term and subsequent terms will be suspended.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4><a id=\"12_5\" name=\"12_5\"><\/a>12.5 General Insurance and Compensation<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Users shall take out appropriate personal injury and liability insurance before conducting experiments. If their project teams include students, they shall make sure that all the students take out appropriate personal injury and liability insurance. If users damage SPring-8 facilities, equipment or persons, either willfully or through gross negligence, JASRI may require them to meet all or part of the cost of repairs. JASRI shall take due account of all relevant circumstances in determining the degree of user liability.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><a id=\"13\" name=\"13\"><\/a>13.
