How to Prevent the Occurrence of Garbled Characters?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We provide Microsoft Word templates for proposal application on the User Information Website (SPring-8\u30fbSACLA). Downloading a template enables you to draft your application offline before you start entering data on the Proposal Submission page.<br>You can copy and paste the data entered in the template onto the fields in the Proposal Submission page. However, we have confirmed that\u00a0characters in the Symbol font\u00a0sometimes become garbled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*The Symbol font was developed to display Greek characters and mathematical symbols in the European word processing environment. Characters in the Symbol font are assigned to codes to which different alphabetical characters are assigned. Therefore, characters and symbols in the Symbol font may be replaced with unexpected ones when the Symbol font is converted to another font.<br><em>e.g., \u201c\u03bc\u201d in the Symbol font corresponds to \u201cm\u201d in other fonts.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, the following problems may occur when character strings containing the Symbol font are copied and pasted onto the fields in the Proposal Submission page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The correct data do not match the data stored in the Proposal Submission system.<\/li><li>The characters are not displayed.<\/li><li>The characters are unreadable.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid the above problems,\u00a0do not use the Symbol font\u00a0when you draft your application using a Microsoft Word template.<br>Note that the current mainstream operating systems support a character encoding standard called\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unicode\" target=\"_blank\">Unicode<\/a>, which enables you to enter Greek characters and mathematical symbols without using the Symbol font.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*Greek characters and mathematical symbols can be entered using the Character Palette function implemented in the operating system of your PC or the Microsoft Word \u201cSymbol\u201d button. If you use the Input Support function of Microsoft Word, ensure that a font other than \u201cSymbol\u201d is selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"569\" height=\"615\" src=\"http:\/\/user.spring8.or.jp\/ui\/wp-content\/uploads\/msword_char_palette_en.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34538\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2>2. Confirmation of Entered Data for Proposal Application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Clicking the \u201cConfirm\/Submit\u201d button on the Proposal Submission page will display a window that confirms the entry of your application. Before clicking the \u201cSubmit\u201d button, ensure that the character strings entered in the fields on the page contain no\u00a0unreadable or missing characters. If you find garbled characters before submission, correct the corresponding characters and click the \u201cSubmit\u201d button. If you find garbled characters after submission, contact the\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:sp8jasri@spring8.or.jp\">SPring-8\/SACLA Users Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u3010Examples of garbled characters\u3011<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"637\" height=\"512\" src=\"http:\/\/user.spring8.or.jp\/ui\/wp-content\/uploads\/mojibake_sample_en.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34541\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2>3. Incompatible Character Strings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a rule, strings of characters that can be found in the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plane_(Unicode)\" target=\"_blank\">Multilingual Plane<\/a>\u00a0(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plane_(Unicode)#Basic_Multilingual_Plane\" target=\"_blank\">Plane 0<\/a>) supported by Unicode (UTF-8) can be entered and saved in the fields on the Proposal Submission page. The following are\u00a0examples of characters\u00a0that cannot be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u3010Unicode Emoji\u3011<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1092\" height=\"322\" src=\"http:\/\/user.spring8.or.jp\/ui\/wp-content\/uploads\/unicode_emoji_sample.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/user.spring8.or.jp\/ui\/wp-content\/uploads\/unicode_emoji_sample.png 1092w, https:\/\/user.spring8.or.jp\/ui\/wp-content\/uploads\/unicode_emoji_sample-768x226.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1092px) 100vw, 1092px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u3010Characters defined in the Supplementary Plane of Unicode\u3011<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"609\" height=\"191\" src=\"http:\/\/user.spring8.or.jp\/ui\/wp-content\/uploads\/unicode_supplementary_multilingual_plane_sample.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34527\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u3010Self-defined characters not included in Unicode\u3011<br>\u3010<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Control_character\" target=\"_blank\">Control characters<\/a>\u00a0(e.g., vertical tabulation)\u3011<br>\u3010Styled text and equations\u3011<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"137\" src=\"http:\/\/user.spring8.or.jp\/ui\/wp-content\/uploads\/style-text_sample_en-1024x137-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34543\" srcset=\"https:\/\/user.spring8.or.jp\/ui\/wp-content\/uploads\/style-text_sample_en-1024x137-1.png 1024w, https:\/\/user.spring8.or.jp\/ui\/wp-content\/uploads\/style-text_sample_en-1024x137-1-768x103.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>*If styled text and equations created using Microsoft Word are copied and pasted onto the fields on the Proposal Submission page, they are recorded as plain text. The character style is not applicable; therefore,\u00a0do not use the Text-Decoration function of Microsoft Word\u00a0when you draft your application using a template.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u3010Examples of styled text and equation saved as plain text\u3011<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"946\" height=\"77\" src=\"http:\/\/user.spring8.or.jp\/ui\/wp-content\/uploads\/plain-text_sample_en.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34545\" srcset=\"https:\/\/user.spring8.or.jp\/ui\/wp-content\/uploads\/plain-text_sample_en.png 946w, https:\/\/user.spring8.or.jp\/ui\/wp-content\/uploads\/plain-text_sample_en-768x63.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 946px) 100vw, 946px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Superscript and subscript numbers can be entered using the Character Palette function implemented in operating systems. You can use these numbers if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the entered data contain incompatible characters, the following error message will appear when you click the \u201cSave\u201d button, and the data will be canceled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"576\" height=\"37\" src=\"http:\/\/user.spring8.or.jp\/ui\/wp-content\/uploads\/can_not_save_message_en.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34547\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>*Characters other than those mentioned above may also be garbled or missing depending on the computer environment. Thoroughly check the Confirmation window (before submission) and the list of your proposals (after submission) to ensure that no unreadable character strings are contained in your application.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
