* Proprietary Research: Users have no obligation to publish their research results. In return, proprietary users are required to pay the fee for the beamtime used (Regular Use: 480,000 yen/shift, 60,000 yen/hour, Time-Designated Use: 720,000 yen/shift, 90,000 yen/hour). Submitted proposals are reviewed only from the viewpoint of technical feasibility, safety of experiment, sociality and ethicality.
The general proposal program is intended for general research using synchrotron radiation. We have two proposal calls and review sessions per year. Once approved, general proposals are valid for half a year. Up to 10% of total beamtime and up to the regulated percentage by every beamline are allocated to proprietary general proposals.
Long-term use of the facility is intended to promote research projects that are expected to produce outstanding results in the field of science and technology, pave the way for new research areas and new research methodology, and contribute to a notable improvement of technology for industrial base by fully utilizing the SPring-8 characteristics. There are one proposal calls and review sessions per year, and the proposal procedures take place before general proposals. The maximum amount of beamtime allocated to each long-term proposal is 16% of all shifts allotted to each beamline for each half-year research term. Once proposals are selected, beamtime access is basically guaranteed for two years. (As of 2016A. Three years are effective for the proposals that are already approved until 2015B.) From the second research term and on, project leaders are required to submit an “Application for Beamtime” by the designated date to request a specific time period in which they wish to use beamtime.
Project leaders must give a presentation on their research plan and project status of the project conducted at the SPring-8 symposium annually. When long-term proposals are completed, they are subject to a post project review.
Urgent proposals can be submitted at any time even during the ongoing half-year research term. Submitted proposals are reviewed on a rolling basis. The urgent proposal program is designed for users with an urgent and critical need to carry out non-proprietary experiments of great public significance.
Time-designated use is intended for users wishing to conduct proprietary research in a particular time period. Please specify the time period in which you wish to conduct your experiment on the online application form. Please note that users are charged the beamtime fee and a 50% premium (See Beamtime Fees). Submitted proposals are reviewed on a rolling basis. Up to 5% of total beamtime is allocated to this program.
SPring-8 Measurement Service
The staff of Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute (JASRI) will perform measurements on behalf of users, and users can choose whether to come to SPring-8 and be present during the measurements or to simply send their samples to SPring-8. This service is intended to provide convenience for companies and research institutions that find it difficult to sustain specialized staff and to accommodate the need for quick access.
Measurement service proposals are considered a form of proprietary proposals and are subject to proprietary beamtime fee and user fee applicable to “Proprietary Time-Designated Proposals.” The following 5 types of service are available: XAFS Measurement Service, Powder X-ray Diffraction Measurement Service, Hard X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (HAXPES) Measurement Service, Thin Film Analysis (GIXD/XRR) Measurement Service and Small Angle Scattering (SAXS) Measurement Service.
Feasibility Study Proposal for Industrial Application
Feasibility Study Proposal for Industrial Application is designed to provide a simple procedure for beamtime application to SPring-8 for users who are interested in the use of SPring-8 or considering the application to SPring-8.
Feasibility Study Proposals for Industrial Applications are considered a form of proprietary proposals and are subject to proprietary beamtime fee and user fee applicable to “Proprietary Time-Designated Proposals.” All 3 Engineering Science Research Beamlines (BL14B2, BL19B2 and BL46XU) are available and all measurement techniques at these beamlines are available to this proposal. The staff of Industrial Application Division of Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute (JASRI) will perform measurements at SPring-8 on behalf of users in common with Measurement Services. Therefore, users can choose whether to come to SPring-8 and be present during the measurements or to simply send their samples to the SPring-8.
Budding Researchers Support Proposal
The Budding Researchers Support Program intends to encourage budding researchers with an exploratory and original research proposal or research theme who are expected to contribute to the development of synchrotron radiation research. Under the program, successful applicants will be provided with support for domestic travel and lodging expenses. Please note that all applicants must be doctoral students (at the time of experiment) who can show initiative, work independently and be self-reliant when conducting research at SPring-8. All applicants are required to obtain permission to apply from their Ph.D. advisor, who must be included as a project team member.
* Please note that domestic travel and lodging expenses support will be no longer available for Budding Researchers Support Proposal from foreign organizations from 2019B term.
Non-Proprietary Grant-Aided Proposal
The Non-Proprietary Grant-Aided Proposal is intended for research proposals that have been reviewed and approved for a large research grant. Under the program, the proposals are exempt from scientific review; and only the safety and technical feasibility of the experiment, necessity of SPring-8 as a research tool, and ethics (e.g. exclusively for peaceful purposes) are reviewed. These proposals are given priority consideration up to the beamtime limit set for public beamlines. Please note that users are required to pay a program fee (131,000 yen/shift, 16,375 yen/hour) and disseminate their research results through publications in refereed journals, conference presentations, etc.
Priority Research Proposals
The Priority Research Program aims to produce publishable results by giving priority to some areas of scientific importance. The Priority Research Proposals are tentatively categorized into two types: priority field type and priority user type.
• Priority Field Type
Research fields that are expected to produce high quality research results and research fields of strategic significance are designated as priority fields. Please note that simultaneous applications involving the same research project cannot be made among priority field proposals. For details about the designation of priority fields, please click here.
Industrial Application Proposal Using Advanced Technology
For Industrial application proposal to promote problem-solving and discovery of needs for new applications in industries by utilizing advanced measurement technologies that are new to project leader.
*At least one person out of a project leader and project team members must be an employee of a private company or related institution. Proposal must be based on measurement techniques that have never been used before by project leaders at SPring-8. Consultation on the feasibility and concrete implementation method with BL scientist before proposal submission is necessary.
• Priority User Type
Partner user proposals are non-proprietary proposals designed for publicly selected/designated Partner users to produce outstanding research results in the field of pioneering SR research using up to 16% (20% is effective for partner users who were selected / designated before 2016A.) of beamtime allocated to beamlines accepting Partner users. Successful applicants for Partner users will be required to comply with all the following missions: the mission of PU is (a) to aim to produce leading-edge SR usage and high-quality research results and promote expansion of intended research field using developed/upgraded beamline facility, (b) to collaborate for beamline facility development/upgrade, and (c) to provide user support relating to (a) and (b).
We invite applications for Partner user positions once a year, which takes place before the proposal calls for research term B. Applications can be submitted online from the UI site.
Generally, the Partner user designation period is two years. However, this may be extended up to five years when the Partner User Review Committee deems it necessary. From the second research term and on, the project leaders are required to submit an “Application for Beamtime” for each half-year research term detailing the proposal, upgrading of the beamline, and user support for the desired beamtime.
When the designation period is completed, the review of the research results (Partner User’s missions) is conducted by the Partner User Review Committee.
Under this program, Partner users are provided with support for the domestic travel and lodging expenses and the expense for consumables necessary for experiments.
Epoch-Making Initiatives Proposal
The purpose of Epoch-Making Initiatives Project is to create and develop unexplored fields in combined and interdisciplinary research beyond the boundaries of traditional fields and to broaden the basis for using SPring-8 in these fields.
When a research group for this project is selected, the project director will be entitled to lead, at his/her discretion, the Epoch-Making Initiatives Proposals, which will be executed by project leaders, using multiple beamlines within the effective period (two years).
Moreover, the beamtime can be arbitrarily allocated within the allowable range for each term (although the number of shifts for beamtime will be determined after review).
Calls to research groups are made only once a year (only in the B term).
Up to two research groups will be selected at one call period and up to four research groups may perform experiments concurrently, regardless of the period in which the proposal was expected.
After the effective period (two years), the achievements of the research group will be assessed (by document submissions and interviews).
Please see the table below for the allocation of public beamline beamtime. In principle, beamtime allocation percentage is adjusted in a way that more than 50% of the total beamtime is allocated to proposals submitted in response to the open calls for proposals.
