Experimental Instructions

The experimental hall is a shared space where many users, staff, and visitors come and go. Carry out experiments with due regard for the safety of all persons in the hall.

  • Keep the hallway (3 m from the wall) free of obstructions. The hallway is used as the evacuation route in emergencies.
  • Since the experimental hall is not equipped with sprinklers, do not bring unnecessary combustible materials into the hall.
  • Eating, drinking, smoking, and applying cosmetics in the experimental hall (in the radiologically controlled areas) are strictly prohibited by regulations.
  • To reduce the risk of accidents, do not work alone. A non-student team member should be present during experiments carried out by students.Even in case of budding researchers support proposals, where PhD students can be project leaders, their advisor is required to be present at the experiments.
  • If you bring hazardous materials into SPring-8, report to a beamline scientist upon arrival at SPring-8 and receive safety instructions, especially on the use of the chemical cabinet. Hazardous materials must be kept locked in the chemical cabinet when not in use. Be sure to take wastewater with you for disposal.
  • If you bring any experimental equipment into SPring-8, make sure that there is no electric leakage or short circuit in advance.
  • Take special care when handling equipment with exposed electrical contacts such as SLIDACs. Such equipment may cause a fire if not sufficiently cleaned.
  • If you use the cooling water ports in the experimental hutch, make sure that the equipment and pipes are designed to withstand a pressure of 1 MPa or greater. Cooling water in the experimental hall is commonly used by users. To use newly installed equipment, prior permission from a beamline scientist is required. Be careful not to pour wastewater back into the system.
